MY PERSONAL RESEARCH JOURNEY

My topic is the benefits of choosing a play-based curriculum in an early childhood program.  I chose this topic because I feel that play is essential in childhood.  Standardized testing has forced preschools to provide an academic curriculum, so children are not being exposed to opportunities to learn through play.  Personally, I am pleased with the simulation process.  I am learning and starting to understand the ways research can help me find out more about my topic.

There is one insight that I have gained so far from constructing the research chart.  The research chart enabled me to take the key terms and definitions I learned this week and really break down what each word means and how it is used in research.  Another insight I have gained so far from this course, is how to effectively evaluate whether information sources are or are not credible when conducting a literature search.

Should anyone have any advice or insight that might help me along this process, please feel free to let me know.  I encourage constructive criticism as well.  So far, I have not found any resources that I can share, but I will continue to search for some.  If you have any resources that you believe would be helpful and beneficial to me, I would appreciate those as well.

  1. Hi Lolita,
Your topic and my topic go hand in hand. My topic is standardize learning. I absolutely agree with you that children are not being exposed to opportunities to learn through play. In preschool and elementary school we had recess. I keep saying that "recess" is a word that has become obsolete. Many schools barely give children gym. Learning through play help children build friendships as well as help them learn. Children learn faster from their peers because they are better able to relate to their peers. I'm looking forward to reading more things about your topic and if along the way you find any resources in reference to standardize learning please feel free to share. Great Topic!!!!

  2. Hi Lolita,

I believe we will be blogging buddies through this course--my topic is how cognitive development forms through rough-and-tumble play. It is very true that play is an important part of learning for young children. I am very interested in hearing about your research journey while you uncover the vast amount of information out there regarding play in early childhood! Once I come across any resources that are pertinent to your topic, I will certainly share them with you :-).

  3. I am very excited to read your progress throughout this course. This is a great topic, that receives a lot of scrutiny with parents that do not understand the importance of play. If there is any information that is shared within my department about it, I will definitely send it your way. I am very eager to read what you will learn through this research!

  4. Aloha Lolita!

I look forward to working with you as well. I am covering school readiness and this is a huge concern and topic in Hawaii. I have spent much of my efforts in center-based programs and implementing more developmentally appropriate practices such as play in infant, toddler, and preschool classrooms. I'll share any research and insights about your topic that I can in the weeks to come.
